Assessing the “food-fuel-forest” competition in Brazil: impacts of sugarcane expansion on deforestation and food supply

چکیده
biofuels present promising opportunities for Latin-American countries, since most countries in the region have a strong potential regarding biofuel production. However, the technology is not without costs. Biofuel production has faced criticisms regarding its environmental and social impacts. Most of them are related to indirect land use changes due to biofuel expansion. This paper aims at presenting an overview of the empirical literature on the environmental impacts of sugarcane ethanol production in Brazil. In addition to that, we develop a land use model in order to assess the potential competition between food production, biofuel expansion and deforestation. Our empirical findings do not provide support to the argument that sugarcane expansion may lead to food supply disruption. Moreover, sugarcane expansion does not seem to represent a potential source of deforestation pressure in the Amazon. On the other hand, enlargement of sugarcane area in the Center-South region _ which is the main expansion axis _ may induce deforestation. This is of particular concern in the cerrado biome (Center-West region) and in the remaining Atlantic rainforest areas (Northeast and Southeast coast of Brazil).

The Impacts of Sugarcane Expansion on Wildlife in the State of Sao Paulo, Brazil
Brazil has become one of the top producers and exporters of food, fibre, and bionergy in the world. The expansion of livestock and soybean production in the Amazon basin appears to be independent of the sugarcane expansion in southeastern Brazil whereas the impact of sugarcane expansion over areas of soybean plantation in previous Cerrado biome is still unknown. However, the expansion of sugarca...
متن کاملEthanol Production , Food and Forests
This paper investigates the direct and indirect impacts of ethanol production on land use, deforestation and food production. A partial equilibrium model of a national economy with two sectors and two regions, one of which includes a residual forest, is developed. It analyses how an exogenous increase in the ethanol price a ects input allocation (land and labor) between sectors (energy crop and...
متن کاملSocioeconomic Impact Assessment of Deforestation of Hyrcanian Forests on Local Communities
The present study was conducted to assess socio-economic impacts of deforestation of Hyrcanian forests in two basins of Do-Hezar and Se-Hezar, northern Iran. To this end, changes in the forest area were detected over the period between 1990 and 2006 based on land use land cover maps derived from Landsat and IRS satellite images. The land use changes were investigated by enhancement of the image...

Nigeria is one of the most malnourished and hunger ridden in the league of developing countries; according to reports of Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of United Nations estimated daily animal protein intake for developing countries averaged at 4.5 g/head/day at the beginning of this century which has hardly risen to 10 g/head/day into the second decade of the century in Nigeria. This...
